11th century AD: The first city-states of Greece flourish

12th century AD: The time of the three eclipses described by Greek historian Thucydides

13th century AD: "Homer" writes the Odyssey and the Iliad

14th century AD: The Parthenon is built on the Acropolis in Athens

15th century AD: Pletho writes "Plato's" books. Greece becomes part of the Ottoman Empire

16th century: Aristarchus of Samos and Copernicus discover, roughly at the same time, that the Earth lies at the center of the universe  

17th century: the Parthenon, then a mosque, is partly destroyed by Venetians

18th century: Greece is still under Ottoman rule

19th century: Greece regains its independence

20th century: Athens becomes a mass tourism destination

21st century: In spite of an economic crisis, Greece remains a sought-after tourist destination
